grantwriting and more
Our partnership with you
Shelley and Adam can help position your organization to best tell your unique story to grantors. We use our decades of experience to develop a robust list of prospective funding sources, prepare effective well-written grant applications, help strengthen your programs and organization, and assist you in building professional and organizational capacity for the future.
Grantwriting
Since 2002, we have secured millions of dollars for dozens of clients. We have obtained funding for programs, general operating support, capital campaigns (building and renovation), equipment (large technical instruments as well as smaller needs like computers and phone systems), organizational capacity building, and multi-agency community efforts.
We will help your nonprofit organization or government agency identify and prioritize funding sources (see “prospect research,” below), prepare letters of inquiry, write grant proposals, and prepare reports. We can also work with you to identify possible grant requests for organizational and programmatic needs, help ensure they link to your mission and strategic plan, then develop a process to vet and prioritize them.
We have written thousands of proposals to grantors ranging from local family foundations to federal agencies, helping our clients obtain the funding they need to impact their communities. Our writing is organized, descriptive,
evocative, and fact-based, and we ensure proposals align strongly with prospective funders’ interests and requirements.
Please keep in mind that your organization must be ready to write grants (see grants readiness page and FAQs), your organization should already be established, and you must already have some degree of support from your community.
consulting
We are available to work with your team to strengthen your organization and clarify your direction. We are experienced in helping to move fledgling or inexperienced organizations to becoming grant-ready. (More information about grant readiness is available here). In addition to working with clients with grantwriting expertise ranging from beginning to expert, we have had success guiding established organizations funded entirely by public funding to set up a strategy that supports diversifying into private grants.
We have lead effective strategic planning efforts, and can also help you identify opportunities for organizational or programmatic capacity building. As experienced nonprofit consultants, we can provide an objective, big-picture approach that complements your deep knowledge of the organization. For services that are not our specialties, we can help you find an additional consultant.
Sometimes you just need a little help to move your grantseeking efforts to the next level. We are happy to work with you on a short-term basis to become more comfortable contacting and developing relationships with funders; assist you in identifying organizational needs, describing your programs/projects to appeal to funders, and developing supporting documents; and support you to become more proficient with seeking grant funding.
prospect research
We can research and identify prospective funders for your organization and individual programs, then provide you with a comprehensive, ranked spreadsheet listing the funders, their deadlines and method of initial approach, their funding range and a recommended request amount, and similar agencies who have received grants from that funder. We maintain a subscription to Foundation Directory Online and have extensive files on private grantors throughout the region.
writing and editing
In addition to preparing grant proposals and reports, we are also available to write related and supporting documents like case statements, annual reports, fact sheets, among others. We are also able to help edit the work of others, which can be a great way for your employees to build their grantwriting knowledge and ability.
grants management
workshops & presentations
It’s difficult to move ahead in a strategic and coherent fashion without a written, well-thought-out plan. We will help you design an annual plan for grantseeking, understand how to manage the requirements of each grant, and be aware of reporting schedules.
We are available to teach grantwriting, prospect research, grants management, and strategic planning classes to staff, board members, and/or representatives from your organization, consortium, or community. Full-day, half-day, and shorter classes and presentations are available. Please contact us for a rate quote.
coaching
establishing grants programs
We are happy to discuss our coaching services with you. Coaching is appropriate if you have a staff member or volunteer that wants to learn grantwriting or improve their grantwriting abilities. We can help the person get started, review and/or edit grant proposals, and/or advise you on how to improve a proposal that was turned down.
We can help you set up a process for effective grantseeking, assist with developing a job description for your staff grantwriter, and sit in on job interviews. We can also take over your grantwriting efforts temporarily while you are in between staff grantwriters.
We are not able to write grant proposals for individuals or for-profit businesses except in very rare occasions. For example, if you are a scientist applying for a research grant, we may be able to help you, or if your business wants to contract with the government and answer a request for proposal (RFP), we would be happy to discuss grant opportunities with you. There are generally not grants available to individuals (unless you are a student applying for an educational grant, or you are an artist or researcher), nor are there typically grants available to start businesses, even if you are a woman, a person of color, disabled, etc. We charge by the hour and are prohibited by our professional organizations from working on a commission or contingency basis.
